| Tullynally has been owned by the Pakenhams, later Earls of Longford, since the 17th century. The original house was remodelled by the 2nd Earl as a huge rambling Gothic revival castle in the 1800's, now probably the largest in Ireland to survive as a family home. As well as housing a fine collection of furniture and potraits, the castle is a museum of the 19th century gadgets including splendid Victorian kitchen and laundries, and a family coach. The romantic pleasure grounds and gardens date from the same era. They encompass two ornamental lakes, fernery walk and grotto, a chinese garden and a circular around the demesne. The walled gardens have extensive flower borders and a magnificent avenue of 200 year old Irish Yews. The parkland surrounding the castle is also notable for its fine trees. |
